Get Involved with the Largest School Supply Drive in the Carolinas

The largest school supply drive in the Carolinas lives here in our city of Charlotte. In partnership with Communities in Schools Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Classroom Central, WSOC-TV collects school supplies and distributes it to students in grades K – 12.

9 School Tools has already served over 3 million children by giving them school supplies that help to prepare students to be successful when school starts in the fall. From now until August 20th, you can donate school supplies and help students do their best this school year!

How to Participate

Donate

Check out the 9 Needed Items List to purchase supplies, and bring it to any of the donation locations.

You can also come out to WSOC’s Special Collection day August 16, from 10:00am-7pm at 1901 N. Tryon St., Charlotte, NC 28206 to drop off your donations.

Organize a Drive of your Own

Organizing a school supply drive of your own to donate to 9 School Tools is a great idea to not only gather supplies, but also to get the word out to the community about how important it is to donate school supplies to students in need.

According to 9 School Tools, there are some essential things you need to know before starting your own 9 School Tool drive.

What you need to know:

  1. Determine drop-off dates and locations.
  2. Consider local community locations such as the YMCA, faith organizations, library, community center or even the school.
  3. Ensure that someone will be at the location at all drop-off times.
  4. Determine whether supplies will need to be sorted and prepped. If so, schedule the drop-off deadline at least one week before the date you plan to give the supplies to the school.
  5. Download the 9 School Tools flyer to promote your event
  6. Reach out to PTAs, community organizations, faith organizations, YMCAs, libraries, etc., and ask them to help you promote the school supply drive. They could do so through bulletins, email blasts, social media, mention at public meetings and/or allowing you to post your flyer in their buildings.
  7. Share the drive through social media

Every year teachers use hundreds of their personal dollars to buy school supplies for their students. Many parents cannot afford to purchase even the most basic of school items such as pencils or notebooks. Help your community’s young students by donating the supplies they need to succeed, or by starting a school supply drive to reach even more people!
